Comparing dashboard wiring organisation in BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus vehicles

This time we will not say much; we will simply look at the dashboard wiring. First is the BMW E46. Its original wiring is very neat. Even with the dashboard and many components removed, the visible number of wires is not excessive and the arrangement is orderly.

The BMW E46 is an old car, yet its wiring remains neat. Second is the Mercedes-Benz W202, whose wiring is also orderly and simple. Finally, we look at a Lexus. It is still a good car, but the visible wiring is much more extensive and appears more cluttered.

For Sifu White and technicians who have to remove and reinstall dashboards, differences in wiring organisation directly affect how easy the work is.

Why access and reassembly matter to the result

The evaporator usually sits inside the cabin HVAC housing. Access depends on the model, year and housing design. Some vehicles require dashboard removal; others provide a side-access route. Fewer dismantling steps are not automatically better, and more dismantling is not automatically necessary. What matters is whether the component can be reached correctly and whether clips, fasteners, wiring and seals can all be restored as intended.

Foam and duct seals keep air travelling through the intended paths. A damaged housing, missing fasteners or displaced seal can leave air leaks, noises or uneven delivery. The repair plan should therefore cover reassembly checks as well as the price of the replacement coil. Marks from earlier work may be useful clues, but glue or cracks alone do not establish who caused the damage or exactly how it happened.

Separate component failure from power and control faults

Pressing A/C is a request; the vehicle still has to meet its operating conditions. Controllers, sensors, relays and wiring work together to determine whether a component runs. A compressor that does not start may have an internal fault, or it may not be receiving the required power or command. Before replacement, the technician needs to establish where the failure occurs in the actual circuit rather than treating the visible symptom as the diagnosis.

A fault code helps direct testing, but it does not always identify a part to buy. Actual output, connectors, ground connections and circuit behaviour under load may all need verification. Added relays or bypass wires can also change the original control relationships. After addressing an electrical fault, the air-conditioning needs to be operated again to check the original complaint. A cleared code or newly installed part is not sufficient evidence of a successful repair by itself.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

• Ask about access, seals, fasteners and the functions checked after reassembly.
• Mention previous wiring changes, added relays or controller replacements.
• Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
