Today we are checking a BMW F10. The computer shows fault code 801207, related to blower load or current. A blower regulator does not normally fail by itself; worn carbon brushes in an old blower motor can cause abnormal current and damage the regulator as well. This is the blower regulator and this is the blower motor. Both components need replacement. Many leaves have also entered from below.

The lower cover should have a protective mesh to stop leaves from entering, but the original mesh is damaged or missing. We will fabricate a new mesh for the customer. We normally provide this type of extra service without an additional charge.

Air delivery and refrigeration are different checks

The blower moves air; the cabin filter, ducts and evaporator surface affect how freely it can pass. Even when the refrigerant circuit can cool, a restricted filter, blower fault or leaking air seal can make the cabin feel uncomfortable. Ask both whether the volume of air has fallen and whether its temperature has risen. These observations separate an air-delivery problem from a refrigeration problem and help avoid unrelated parts replacement.

If only particular fan speeds are affected, the motor and that vehicle’s speed-control arrangement need attention. If every speed feels weak, the inlet and ducts also deserve inspection. Noise, vibration and overheated connectors are separate clues to report. After replacement, checking that the motor spins is only a first step: the fan speeds, outlets, mounting and seals also need checking. A high fan setting is a designed function, not evidence by itself that an owner has misused the system.

Separate component failure from power and control faults

Pressing A/C is a request; the vehicle still has to meet its operating conditions. Controllers, sensors, relays and wiring work together to determine whether a component runs. A compressor that does not start may have an internal fault, or it may not be receiving the required power or command. Before replacement, the technician needs to establish where the failure occurs in the actual circuit rather than treating the visible symptom as the diagnosis.

A fault code helps direct testing, but it does not always identify a part to buy. Actual output, connectors, ground connections and circuit behaviour under load may all need verification. Added relays or bypass wires can also change the original control relationships. After addressing an electrical fault, the air-conditioning needs to be operated again to check the original complaint. A cleared code or newly installed part is not sufficient evidence of a successful repair by itself.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

• Identify affected fan speeds or outlets and mention any noise.
• Mention previous wiring changes, added relays or controller replacements.
• Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
