The key point

The case separates surface cleanliness from sealing: cleaning cannot close a leak, and a replacement still needs specification and supply checks.

Today Sifu White discusses a BMW F30. The cooling coil is leaking even though its surface looks clean. Why can that happen? Every component has a service life. Some people think air-conditioning needs attention only when it is dirty, but this car arrived with low refrigerant caused by a leak.

Once the cooling coil has a hole and is leaking, flushing or routine service cannot seal it. The refrigerant must be properly recovered before the component is opened and replaced.

Look at this BMW. Even when the cooling coil appears new and clean, it can still leak once it reaches the end of its service life. A perforated coil must be replaced. The video identifies Valeo as the original supplier specification for the F30, so we advise using a suitable Valeo cooling coil. Once installed, the dashboard can be reassembled.

Look at the wiring behind the BMW dashboard; it is neatly arranged.

Why cooling after a regas does not prove a repair

Refrigerant circulates through a closed circuit; it is not fuel that the engine consumes. If cooling returns after charging and then deteriorates, the investigation should establish whether there is a leak, whether the previous charge matched the specification, and whether another control or heat-rejection problem is present. The initial return of cold air describes performance at that moment. It does not show that a leaking component has been repaired.

A model’s familiar failure pattern is a starting point, not proof. The condenser, connections, hoses, compressor seals and evaporator inside the cabin are different possible inspection locations. An oil stain can guide a leak test, but it is not a substitute for confirmation. Finding one leak also does not clear every other part of the circuit. After repair, the sealing and cooling performance need to be checked again under conditions relevant to the original complaint.

Choose maintenance after identifying the problem

Cabin-filter service, cleaning the evaporator surface, flushing the refrigerant circuit and replacing a damaged component are different jobs. They address different problems and should not be grouped into a promise that one “service” will restore cooling. Air-side cleaning may improve airflow restricted by dirt, but it cannot close a hole in a metal coil. Flushing oil passages also cannot repair a broken wire or a sticking air door.

A quotation should explain where the work is performed, its purpose and what improvement is expected. Maintenance intervals should reflect the vehicle handbook, operating environment, condition and component supplier’s requirements, rather than a mileage figure from one video being applied to every car. Persistent refrigerant loss, unusual noise or control faults call for diagnosis before deciding whether cleaning belongs in the repair plan.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

  • Record the last regas date and how long cooling lasted.
  • Ask what is being cleaned, what fault it addresses and how improvement will be verified.
  • Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.

Questions owners ask

Should the air-cond need repeated regassing?

Repeated regassing should trigger an investigation rather than become the routine solution. Record how long cooling lasts after each visit and have the leak locations and charge specification checked.

Should flushing be the first response to poor cooling?

First establish the fault and the purpose of cleaning. Flushing is not a substitute for leak testing, electrical diagnosis or mechanical repair, and component suitability must follow the relevant procedure.
