This is a very common symptom: cooling is insufficient at midday, although there is no problem in the morning or at night. Computer data shows around 4.0°C and appears normal, but the reading inside the cabin is only about 13.2°C. An outside component becomes very cold and wet, with visible condensation.
Why does this happen? We open the system and inspect it. The cooling coil does not appear to be in a normal condition. The sensor and expansion valve are checked and replaced, and the filter is also inspected for dirt. After reassembly, the result will be observed.
Now we check the readings after completion. Some numbers spoken in the audio are unclear, but the readings on the instruments and diagnostic computer have changed. One clearly identifiable reading is approximately 5.9°C.
completed quickly and at a reasonable price.
Why hot weather or idling can reveal a cooling problem
Air-conditioning has to move cabin heat outside. Hot weather and sun-heated seats and trim increase the cooling load, while airflow through the condenser affects heat rejection. Airflow conditions change between driving and standing still. “Warm at idle, colder while moving” is therefore a useful clue, but it does not prove a fan failure without testing the fan, refrigerant circuit and relevant operating conditions.
Assessment can include condenser and radiator condition, fan operation, engine-cooling data and refrigerant specification. Some vehicles change A/C operation when engine or other protection conditions are active. Vent temperature also depends on ambient conditions, humidity, recirculation and fan speed. A reading from one video is not a universal pass mark for every car. Meaningful before-and-after comparisons should record comparable test conditions.
Why airflow can fade during a long drive
The evaporator is the component commonly called the cooling coil. Air is cooled as it passes over it. If ice builds up on its surface, the air passage can become progressively restricted. The owner may notice strong cooling initially, then less and less air during a longer drive. That sequence is different from air continuing to blow strongly but becoming warm, and the distinction helps the technician choose relevant tests.
Temperature feedback, anti-icing control, refrigerant condition, metering and airflow can all be relevant; ice alone does not prove a sensor has failed. A problem that develops after a long run may not appear during a short idle test. Record how long it takes, the temperature and fan settings, and whether airflow returns after the system has been off for a while. Verification should cover those trigger conditions without treating unsafe driving as a diagnostic requirement.
What to tell the workshop about your own car
You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.
- Compare idling, driving, midday and evening behaviour.
- Record when airflow fades and whether stopping or switching A/C off changes it.
- Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
Questions owners ask
What vent temperature counts as normal?
Use the vehicle specification and test conditions. A video reading is a case observation, not a universal standard independent of ambient conditions, fan speed and running time.
Does fading airflow mean low refrigerant?
Not from airflow alone. A restricted filter, blower problem or evaporator icing can affect air delivery. Separate a change in airflow from a change in temperature.
