The key point

Air-conditioning can interact with thermal management and protection; a turtle symbol alone does not diagnose the compressor.

Sifu White explains what happened

We are double-checking the wiring. Several months earlier, this Volvo had undergone air-conditioning repair at Sifu White because its compressor failed and the system required cleaning or related work. The car was resolved afterward. According to the customer's history, the vehicle was still under warranty at the time, but its mileage exceeded a particular limit by roughly 100 kilometres.

The service centre then declined the compressor warranty claim, so the customer consulted Sifu White and proceeded with the repair. More recently, the customer called again because the air-conditioning was initially warm, after which the vehicle felt unable to accelerate or drive normally and would move only very slowly. Sifu White first considered whether the compressor had failed again.

On a hybrid or electric vehicle, compressor failure can be associated with an insulation fault, and the system may limit vehicle speed for safety. The customer also saw a turtle symbol indicating reduced-power mode. We asked for the vehicle to be brought in for inspection. Diagnosis found a broken wire in this area, apparently bitten through by a rat.

What changes with hybrid and EV air-conditioning

An electric compressor can run independently of the engine belt, so belt-and-clutch diagnosis cannot simply be transferred to it. Alongside refrigeration performance, investigation may involve high-voltage power, control, insulation and vehicle-specific thermal-management conditions. An uncomfortable cabin is the symptom the owner notices, but the operating restriction may involve protection logic shared with other vehicle systems.

Oil must meet the requirements of the particular electric compressor; viscosity or a “universal oil” description is not enough. High-voltage and pressurised-system work requires trained personnel following the manufacturer’s procedure. Verification also needs to cover starting, stopping, sustained operation and relevant warnings, not only a brief period of cold air. Running times and temperatures in a video document that job rather than establish a universal EV test standard.

Separate component failure from power and control faults

Pressing A/C is a request; the vehicle still has to meet its operating conditions. Controllers, sensors, relays and wiring work together to determine whether a component runs. A compressor that does not start may have an internal fault, or it may not be receiving the required power or command. Before replacement, the technician needs to establish where the failure occurs in the actual circuit rather than treating the visible symptom as the diagnosis.

A fault code helps direct testing, but it does not always identify a part to buy. Actual output, connectors, ground connections and circuit behaviour under load may all need verification. Added relays or bypass wires can also change the original control relationships. After addressing an electrical fault, the air-conditioning needs to be operated again to check the original complaint. A cleared code or newly installed part is not sufficient evidence of a successful repair by itself.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

  • Mention EV/hybrid warnings, reduced-power messages or symptoms during charging.
  • Mention previous wiring changes, added relays or controller replacements.
  • Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.

Questions owners ask

Must a hybrid compressor always be replaced with a new one?

The choice depends on the fault, internal condition, insulation requirements and suitable parts. Repair or rebuilt options need clear testing, compatibility and written coverage, not just a lower price.

Can a fault code be used as a replacement instruction?

Use the code together with circuit and component tests. Wiring, ground faults or unmet control conditions can prevent an otherwise serviceable component from operating.
