The key point
Filter fitment, housing seals and the sensor are also discussed, showing that contamination and air-delivery control can coexist.

During a long drive, airflow becomes progressively weaker and the air-conditioning turns warm. Today we are discussing a Volkswagen Polo with a failed compressor. Why do we dismantle so many parts after compressor failure? Some people replace only the compressor and avoid changing the condenser, while condenser access on the Polo requires opening the front section and fender liner.
The air-conditioning system has turned black from contamination. Piping can be removed, cleaned and reused if it does not leak. The condenser and cooling coil must be assessed; in this case, the cooling coil is also affected and we suggest replacement. The cabin air filter needs replacement as well. The customer asks whether a cheap filter from Shopee offers the same quality, and Sifu says not necessarily.
The original filter shown is heavier, uses better material and seals, and has a lock that keeps it correctly positioned. The cheaper unit is lighter and differs in quality. For the cooling coil, the customer has a particular budget, so we recommend a premium Malaysian-made unit supplied with an expansion valve. Damaged casing and seals also need restoration.
The customer also complains that after extended driving, airflow weakens and the air-conditioning becomes warm. That is a sign of system freezing. We advise replacing the temperature sensor as well because it helps control cut-off and prevent the cooling coil from icing.
How contamination changes the repair scope
Refrigerant and lubricant travel through several components. Debris from internal compressor wear can therefore create a problem beyond the compressor itself. Installing a replacement while contamination remains in circulation can expose the replacement to the same problem. The investigation should distinguish the source of damage, the spread of contamination and the condition of components that might still be serviceable. Neither “compressor only” nor “replace everything” is a complete diagnosis on its own.
Whether flushing is appropriate depends on component construction, contamination and the manufacturer’s procedure. Fine passages and trapped debris can be difficult to clean reliably. Compressors, driers and metering devices cannot simply be treated as open lengths of pipe during flushing. Oil colour is one observation, but colour alone does not measure moisture content or establish that every component has failed. An itemised explanation should identify what needs replacement, what can be cleaned, and the evidence behind each decision.
Why airflow can fade during a long drive
The evaporator is the component commonly called the cooling coil. Air is cooled as it passes over it. If ice builds up on its surface, the air passage can become progressively restricted. The owner may notice strong cooling initially, then less and less air during a longer drive. That sequence is different from air continuing to blow strongly but becoming warm, and the distinction helps the technician choose relevant tests.
Temperature feedback, anti-icing control, refrigerant condition, metering and airflow can all be relevant; ice alone does not prove a sensor has failed. A problem that develops after a long run may not appear during a short idle test. Record how long it takes, the temperature and fan settings, and whether airflow returns after the system has been off for a while. Verification should cover those trigger conditions without treating unsafe driving as a diagnostic requirement.
What to tell the workshop about your own car
You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.
- Ask for an itemised scope separating contamination work from leak repair.
- Record when airflow fades and whether stopping or switching A/C off changes it.
- Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
Questions owners ask
Does compressor failure require replacing the whole system?
Not automatically. Wear, contamination, leaks and the ability to clean a component determine the scope. A sound component is not defective merely because it belongs to the same circuit.
Does fading airflow mean low refrigerant?
Not from airflow alone. A restricted filter, blower problem or evaporator icing can affect air delivery. Separate a change in airflow from a change in temperature.
