Mazda from Kelantan repaired in stages for leaks, cooling coil and temperature-sensor faults

The Mazda from Kelantan first had external leaks treated within budget, followed later by confirmation of an evaporator leak.

This car shows signs that its cooling coil was previously replaced, but the installed unit is not original. The current problem is leakage. When the customer visited last month, we found heavy leaks at the condenser and several refrigerant hoses or lines. We recommended repairing the system step by step according to budget, starting with the condenser and leaking hoses. The system worked after replacement, but the customer said the cooling coil had also been changed before.

The non-original cooling coil is now visibly leaking and has oil residue. Whenever the dashboard is opened for cooling-coil replacement on this model, the temperature sensor should also be inspected because it can cut off too early before sufficient cooling or fail to regulate the system and cause freezing. We normally tell the customer in advance that if the dashboard is being removed and the cooling coil replaced, it is worth considering the temperature sensor and expansion valve at the same time.

This customer came from Kelantan.

Why cooling after a regas does not prove a repair

Refrigerant circulates through a closed circuit; it is not fuel that the engine consumes. If cooling returns after charging and then deteriorates, the investigation should establish whether there is a leak, whether the previous charge matched the specification, and whether another control or heat-rejection problem is present. The initial return of cold air describes performance at that moment. It does not show that a leaking component has been repaired.

A model’s familiar failure pattern is a starting point, not proof. The condenser, connections, hoses, compressor seals and evaporator inside the cabin are different possible inspection locations. An oil stain can guide a leak test, but it is not a substitute for confirmation. Finding one leak also does not clear every other part of the circuit. After repair, the sealing and cooling performance need to be checked again under conditions relevant to the original complaint.

Why airflow can fade during a long drive

The evaporator is the component commonly called the cooling coil. Air is cooled as it passes over it. If ice builds up on its surface, the air passage can become progressively restricted. The owner may notice strong cooling initially, then less and less air during a longer drive. That sequence is different from air continuing to blow strongly but becoming warm, and the distinction helps the technician choose relevant tests.

Temperature feedback, anti-icing control, refrigerant condition, metering and airflow can all be relevant; ice alone does not prove a sensor has failed. A problem that develops after a long run may not appear during a short idle test. Record how long it takes, the temperature and fan settings, and whether airflow returns after the system has been off for a while. Verification should cover those trigger conditions without treating unsafe driving as a diagnostic requirement.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

  • Record the last regas date and how long cooling lasted.
  • Record when airflow fades and whether stopping or switching A/C off changes it.
  • Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.

Questions owners ask

Should the air-cond need repeated regassing?

Repeated regassing should trigger an investigation rather than become the routine solution. Record how long cooling lasts after each visit and have the leak locations and charge specification checked.

Does fading airflow mean low refrigerant?

Not from airflow alone. A restricted filter, blower problem or evaporator icing can affect air delivery. Separate a change in airflow from a change in temperature.
