The key point
Remarks about power disconnection and the head unit are case experience, not an inevitable outcome on every 508.

Sifu White explains what happened

The customer travelled from Johor to Kuala Lumpur to see Sifu. The complaint is intermittent air-conditioning: it may suddenly become warm while the car is stopped and cool again once the vehicle moves. On a Peugeot 508, the first step while the system is warm is to see whether the magnetic clutch is operating. If the magnetic clutch is not moving, the compressor is not necessarily the cause.
If the magnetic clutch does not operate, one possibility is a module fault. If the clutch operates but the air-conditioning remains warm, the compressor, control circuit or relay must be checked. The system also needs to be opened to look for black contamination. In this case, black residue is visible, extending as far as the cooling coil.
I was surprised that the customer travelled so far because Johor surely has many air-conditioning workshops. The customer says he watched many of Sifu's TikTok videos and appreciated how clearly Sifu explains air-conditioning problems and which components need replacement.
The customer says ordinary workshops in Johor told him what work was needed but did not explain the cause. That is why he decided to travel to Kuala Lumpur and see Sifu. Sifu thanks him for the support and wants to share a few tips for Peugeot owners, regardless of model.
First, a Peugeot's engine cooling system must be maintained properly in Malaysia's climate. Second, a Peugeot 508 carries a risk involving the player or infotainment head unit when the dashboard is removed. The battery has to be disconnected for the work, and after power in an integrated circuit or capacitor has discharged, the radio may fail to restart when power is restored.
This is a risk encountered in Peugeot 508 cases. If the player will not power on after air-conditioning work, it should be investigated as a known possibility rather than judged without diagnosis. For the air-conditioning system, if the magnetic clutch operates but there is no pressure and no cooling, the compressor becomes the main suspect. If the clutch does not operate, inspect the module and control circuit.
The module and control circuit remain inspection directions. Programming requirements and the exact procedure are not established in the source and need confirmation against the vehicle’s service information.
Separate component failure from power and control faults
Pressing A/C is a request; the vehicle still has to meet its operating conditions. Controllers, sensors, relays and wiring work together to determine whether a component runs. A compressor that does not start may have an internal fault, or it may not be receiving the required power or command. Before replacement, the technician needs to establish where the failure occurs in the actual circuit rather than treating the visible symptom as the diagnosis.
A fault code helps direct testing, but it does not always identify a part to buy. Actual output, connectors, ground connections and circuit behaviour under load may all need verification. Added relays or bypass wires can also change the original control relationships. After addressing an electrical fault, the air-conditioning needs to be operated again to check the original complaint. A cleared code or newly installed part is not sufficient evidence of a successful repair by itself.
How contamination changes the repair scope
Refrigerant and lubricant travel through several components. Debris from internal compressor wear can therefore create a problem beyond the compressor itself. Installing a replacement while contamination remains in circulation can expose the replacement to the same problem. The investigation should distinguish the source of damage, the spread of contamination and the condition of components that might still be serviceable. Neither “compressor only” nor “replace everything” is a complete diagnosis on its own.
Whether flushing is appropriate depends on component construction, contamination and the manufacturer’s procedure. Fine passages and trapped debris can be difficult to clean reliably. Compressors, driers and metering devices cannot simply be treated as open lengths of pipe during flushing. Oil colour is one observation, but colour alone does not measure moisture content or establish that every component has failed. An itemised explanation should identify what needs replacement, what can be cleaned, and the evidence behind each decision.
What to tell the workshop about your own car
You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.
- Mention previous wiring changes, added relays or controller replacements.
- Ask for an itemised scope separating contamination work from leak repair.
- Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
Questions owners ask
Can a fault code be used as a replacement instruction?
Use the code together with circuit and component tests. Wiring, ground faults or unmet control conditions can prevent an otherwise serviceable component from operating.
Does compressor failure require replacing the whole system?
Not automatically. Wear, contamination, leaks and the ability to clean a component determine the scope. A sound component is not defective merely because it belongs to the same circuit.
