This car should use a 3PK power-steering belt, but someone fitted a 4PK belt. Fortunately, we found the problem. The belt was noisy and already scratched. An incorrectly sized belt can break or become entangled in other components and cause further damage. The car's wiring had also been modified.

Someone used the fan-signal wiring to activate the compressor. The compressor should receive its signal through the original relay, but the circuit had been bypassed directly to the fan signal. Tracing the fault showed that the ECU was not outputting a signal to the compressor relay. Sifu White opened and inspected the ECU, repaired the fault and restored the wiring to its original configuration.

Another control component also responded slowly and could cut off the signal, but its exact name is unclear in the audio. That may be why the previous repairer thought the fan signal had to be used directly.

Separate component failure from power and control faults

Pressing A/C is a request; the vehicle still has to meet its operating conditions. Controllers, sensors, relays and wiring work together to determine whether a component runs. A compressor that does not start may have an internal fault, or it may not be receiving the required power or command. Before replacement, the technician needs to establish where the failure occurs in the actual circuit rather than treating the visible symptom as the diagnosis.

A fault code helps direct testing, but it does not always identify a part to buy. Actual output, connectors, ground connections and circuit behaviour under load may all need verification. Added relays or bypass wires can also change the original control relationships. After addressing an electrical fault, the air-conditioning needs to be operated again to check the original complaint. A cleared code or newly installed part is not sufficient evidence of a successful repair by itself.

What to compare before repairing or replacing a part

A similar shape, a logo or a seller’s use of “original”, “OEM” or “recon” does not establish suitability on its own. Model, year, engine configuration, part number and connections need matching. Supply traceability, actual condition and warranty terms are separate checks. New components still need inspection before and after installation, while used components need particular attention to their history and the basis on which they have been tested.

The value of a component repair also depends on the assembly’s internal condition and the availability of suitable repair parts. An external clutch fault can require a different solution from internal wear or contamination. Compare labour, related system work, the possibility of having to dismantle the assembly again and written coverage as well as the part price. Prices, turnaround times and warranties mentioned in a historical video do not automatically apply to another vehicle.

What to tell the workshop about your own car

You do not need to guess a part name first. A clear description of what actually happens is often more useful for reproducing the complaint than requesting a particular replacement.

• Mention previous wiring changes, added relays or controller replacements.
• Bring earlier quotations, part numbers and warranty records.
• Include the model, year, recent repairs and what changed before or after the symptom began.
